IntraLase FS may make LASIK even safer

Due to a new advance in technology, LASIK at the Harrisburg and Camp Hill located Memorial Eye Institute, is now even safer. Dr. Chotiner is using an IntraLase  FS Laser to create corneal flaps, bringing a new level of safety to vision correction surgery by providing an all-laser approach.

Traditionally, the creation of a corneal flap, required in LASIK surgery, was performed with a mechanical, hand-held device (known as a microkeratome) that moved across the cornea to cut the flap. Although mechanical microkeratomes are safe, the majority of the few complications that do occur with LASIK are microkeratome related. Using the IntraLase FS Laser takes LASIK safety to the next level by significantly reducing the chance of these microkeratome related complications.

"We felt like the added safety was worth the investment in technology," said Bennett Chotiner, M.D., Medical Director at Memorial Eye Institute with locations in Harrisburg and Camp Hill Pennsylvannia. "Studies have shown that the all-laser approach, utilizing the IntraLase laser and an excimer laser, not only avoids microkeratome-related complications, but also offers the potential for better vision after LASIK."

To make the corneal flap using the IntraLase FS Laser, a laser beam is focused into a tiny spot of energy that passes harmlessly through the outer layers of the cornea until reaching its exact focal point within the central layer of the cornea. There, the corneal flap procedure is initiated with remarkable precision.

Some people who weren't candidates for LASIK may be able to undergo IntraLASIK in Harrisburg and Camp Hill. The IntraLase laser can make corneal flaps as thin as 100 microns, which may allow surgeons to perform IntraLASIK on people with thinner and flatter corneas
